The mid-sized city of Fort Wayne, Indiana, is a wonderful place to visit or to call home. It has several universities, plenty of amenities, a beautiful children’s zoo, and plenty of lovely parks.

History of Fort Wayne

Under the direction of American Revolutionary War general Anthony Wayne, Fort Wayne was built in 1794. The European-American settlement was developed next to the Maumee rivers as a trading post for pioneers.

The village underwent tremendous growth, including the building of the Chicago, Fort Wayne, and Eastern Railroad. This booming manufacturing town grew in logistics, distribution, transportation, health, finance, and hospitality, bringing the city to where it is today.

Where is Fort Wayne Located?

Located in the northeastern part of the beautiful state of Indiana, in Allen County, Fort Wayne is east of the Mississippi River. This major metropolitan area sits at the hub of three rivers and is the second-largest city in Indiana. It is 18 miles west of the Ohio border and 50 miles south of Michigan’s border.

Historically, the city was split into four quadrants: northwest, northeast, southwest, and southeast. The Maumee River separates the northeast and southeast.

Portions of the St Mary’s River and the Chicago, Fort Wayne, and Eastern Railroad divide the northwest and southwest quadrants. An early 20th-century master plan for the city proposed a network of parks and neighborhoods connected to the city’s parkway and boulevards by the city’s three rivers.

The city now has eleven public parks, ten boulevards, and four parkways, covering 1,883 acres.

How Big Is Fort Wayne?

Fort Wayne is 110.834 sq miles of land and .214 sq miles of water. The city’s population is 253,691, making it an ideal smaller city that is not as intimidating as larger Midwestern cities such as Chicago or Indianapolis.
