Located in the western United States, between the states of California and Utah, is the state of Nevada. Affectionately known as the silver state, Nevada is the gambling and entertainment capital of the country. With its arid deserts, snow-peaked mountains, lush national parks, and bustling cities, Nevada has a little something for everyone.

What is Nevada famous for?

The city of Las Vegas, of course. Located in Clark county, in southern Nevada, Las Vegas, often known simply as “Vegas”, is the entertainment capital of the world. The city’s mega-casinos and thriving entertainment industry have made it an icon in pop-culture and a dream destination for tourists from around the world.

What are The Vegas Golden Knights?

A professional ice hockey team based in Las Vegas; who competes in the National Hockey League as a member of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. Starting in 2017, the team plays its home games at T-Mobile Arena on the Las Vegas Strip.

Why is Nevada called the silver state?

Nevada contains the largest silver deposit in the U.S. and silver played an important role in its development; in fact, about 30 percent of all silver produced in the U.S. comes from Nevada. Apart from “the silver state”, Nevada is also known as ” the sage-hen state”, “the mining state”, “the sagebrush state”, and the very cool-sounding “battle-born state”.

During its existence, Nevada has already had multiple state flags. In 1905, the first flag was introduced. Nevada’s new flag was approved in 1991. Nevada has a cobalt blue background on its flag. In the top left portion of the flag, a five-pointed silver star is placed between two sprays of sagebrush which cross to form a half-wreath.

The silver pointed star represents Silver which is the most found resource in the state. The sagebrush is the state symbol and the state flower of Nevada. These are placed on the flag because they represent the state adeptly.

Population of Nevada

With a population of just around three million, Nevada is the 19th least populous state in the U.S. states. Most of Nevada’s population is centered around the south; in fact, Nevada is the most centralized of the U.S. states in terms of population. Most of its population is white, making up 66.2% of its residents, followed up by Hispanics at 26.5%. About 60% of the population identifies as Christian.

Languages spoken in Nevada

Nevada has no official language. English is the most widely spoken language in Nevada while Spanish is the second most popular. Other languages are mostly Asian and Pacific Island languages.

  • There are about 150 marriages in Las Vegas each day.
  • The kangaroo rat, which is native to the Death Valley, can go through its entire life without consuming liquid.
  • Area 51, famed for its extra-terrestrial related conspiracy theories, is located in the southern part of Nevada.
  • Construction worker Hard Hats were first invented for use in Nevada.
  • In 1910, a law made it illegal to gamble in Las Vegas.
  • Nevada has the most mountain ranges of any U.S. state.
  • Nevada has the highest gold production of any U.S. state; in the world, it is second only to South Africa.

Best Places to visit in Nevada

Las Vegas – As a surprise to absolutely no one, Las Vegas is on the top of our list for places you should visit in Nevada. Visit the neon museum, featuring neon signs from casinos, hotels, and other businesses. Climb up stratosphere tower, the tallest standing observation tower in the United States rising more than eleven hundred feet above Las Vegas. Ride the 550 feet tall “high roller”, the largest Ferris wheel in the world featuring beautiful views of Las Vegas valley. In Vegas, there is always something happening; attend the many amazing shows ranging from concerts, to magic shows, to theatre- Vegas is home to the world’s most talented performers. Take a selfie with the Las Vegas sign and visit the many unique local shops. And, of course, for the true Las Vegas you have to visit the many mega casinos and hotels. 

Lake Tahoe – Located at the border between Nevada and California, lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in the United states. It is said, “to breathe the same air as angels, you have to go to Tahoe.” From the many hotels and taverns at the lakeside, you can take in beautiful views of the clear blue lake and the distant mountains that surround it. Popular locations include: King’s beach, Pope beach, and Camp Richardson Resort.

Death Valley National Park – Death Valley: the driest place in the United Stated and the hottest place on earth. Just a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Las Vegas, Death Valley National Park is located at the border between Nevada and California. Visit the beautiful waterfall at Darwin falls, the Wild Rose Kilns, and ” the great view” at Aguereberry point. Other famous sites include the Zabriskie Point and the Badwater Basin.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area – Just 15 miles from Las Vegas, the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is famous for its scenic drive.

Carson City– Carson City is an independent city which means that that is not in the territory of any county or counties. It is also the capital city of Nevada, and, with a population of more than 50,000, it is among the most populated cities in Nevada. Visit the famous Nevada state museum or the silver saddle ranch.

Great Basin National Park– known for its bristlecone pine groves & wildlife Great Basin National Park is a popular tourist destination. Important sites to visit include: Stella Lake, Wheeler Peak, National Forest Development Road, Pole Canyon, Rock Glacier, and Dead Lake.
