San Francisco is a major US city – but it is smaller than many rival cities. The population of San Francisco is 882,519. That includes a male population of 51 percent and a female population of 48.9. It is the sixteenth biggest city in the US in terms of population.

San Francisco has a size of 121.4 km2. Much smaller than New York City or Los Angeles and other similar cities.

San Francisco is a magnificent city to live in. The city has a vibrant economy and a great climate. It also has an excellent outdoor lifestyle and is well-connected to the rest of the US.

But, there are downsides to living in San Francisco. The city is costly – the 16th most expensive city globally. Also, the city has very high living costs. A one-bedroom apartment can cost up to $3,500 per month.

Furthermore, the traffic in San Francisco can be terrible. Getting to other places in Northern California is sometimes time-consuming because of traffic.

The best time to visit San Francisco is between September and November because the weather is the warmest and most-settled. Also, visiting during the spring months, April and June, is an equally good time to visit.

What are the best areas to live in San Francisco?

Pacific Heights

Pacific Heights is in the center of San Francisco. The area has an elevation of around 115 meters. Pacific Heights will bless you with outstanding views of the coast and islands. Also, you’ll be able to see the Golden Gate Bridge.

The area is not the best for those on a budget. It is one of San Francisco’s high-end neighborhoods. Many billionaires are living here, and rent can be costly.

Sunset District

The Sunset District is the largest area in San Francisco – it has a population of around 95,000.  Citizens who are looking for good job opportunities will love the Sunset District.

There are many schools, developed facilities, and it’s affordable. Furthermore, the area is one of San Francisco’s safest neighborhoods.

Presidio Heights

If you’re looking for one of San Francisco’s quietest neighborhoods, you will love Presidio Heights. It is a peaceful neighborhood, home to many Silicon Valley workers.

The best benefit of Presidio Heights is the excellent coastal views. Also, it is only a 30-minute commute to downtown San Francisco. There are excellent facilities, and it is a safe area.

Noe Valley

Noe Valley offers locals a superb central location. The city named the neighborhood after a Mexican mayor that used to own the area as a rancho. Many professionals and families choose Noe Valley.  

Furthermore, the neighborhood is next to Twin Peaks. The Twin Peaks offers the best San Francisco city views. 

What is San Francisco known for?

Golden Gate Bridge

Golden Gate Bridge is one of the world’s most famous landmarks. The bridge is over 2.5 kilometers in length. When architects and builders completed the bridge in 1937, the world considered it an engineering masterpiece because it was the world’s longest suspension bridge at the time.

Also, the world refers to the bridge as one of the seven wonders of the modern world. It is the most photographed bridge worldwide and a superb spot to go running or walking.


Alcatraz is one of the world’s most famous prisons. San Francisco built the prison to be impossible to escape. However, in 1962 three men famously tried to escape the prison, but nobody knows if they survived.  

The prison closed in 1963 because it was too costly to maintain. Today, more than 1.5 million people visit annually, and it is one of San Francisco’s top attractions.

Twin Peaks

Twin Peaks is San Francisco’s best viewpoint. The peak is about 281 meters above sea level. Also, you can see the entire city from the mount, including Alcatraz and Golden Gate Bridge.

Furthermore, there are various excellent hikes to the top, and the best time to go is at sunset. where you’ll see the city and bridge light up for night

Fishermans Wharf

Fisherman’s Wharf is San Francisco’s most famous area. Visitors love Pier 39, offering various boutique shops, restaurants, and the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.

You should also check out the Aquatic Park & Beach, the Aquarium of the Bay, and the Cartoon Art Museum.

The Golden Gate Park

The Golden Gate Park is twenty percent larger than Central Park, and it is one of San Francisco’s top icons. Visitors love a thousand acres of rolling hills, hidden treasures, and the giant trees around the park.

Moreover, the park contains the Japanese Tea Gardens, the Conservatory of Flowers, hiking trails, a golf course, and a children’s playground. There is not a better spot during the hotter months!


San Francisco is one of the leading cities in the United States. It is a prosperous city with many historic attractions, excellent viewpoints, and a tourist hub for millions of travelers. It is a great spot to live and visit.
