If you ask someone who is not from South Carolina about this state, they might mention sports or the beaches, or even mix it up with North Carolina, but there is so much more to the Palmetto State. You might be thinking about visiting or moving there. In that case, you are probably wondering: what is South Carolina like?

Basically, South Carolina is a southeastern state. The wonderful weather and its booming economy are only a few of the things that make this state a good place to live. While South Carolina is well known for its beaches and NASCAR, it is also famous for its role in the Civil War.

Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about South Carolina before you decide to see the Palmetto State for yourself.

Where Is South Carolina on the Map?

South Carolina is located in the southeast of the US. It is considered a part of the Deep South, and it makes up part of the East Coast, as well. Thanks to South Carolina’s unique shape, it does not have a solely eastern border.

South Carolina shares a border with North Carolina to the north and northeast, the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast, and Georgia in the west. The border of Georgia and South Carolina runs along The Savannah River.

Interestingly, North Carolina and South Carolina were originally settled together in a large territory simply known as Carolina in 1663. The two were separated in 1729.

Is South Carolina a Good Place to Live?

South Carolina has been named one of the top five states for new resident satisfaction.

The Palmetto State is a popular moving destination for several reasons that make it a great place to live, with special mention going to the beautiful weather and landscapes, thriving economy, and a variety of activities and locations to explore.

Not only is the weather of South Carolina fairly mild all year long, there are several scenic landscapes to inhabit or explore, from the mountains to the coast. If you like to hike, jog, swim, or simply enjoy being outdoors, this state could be perfect for you.

The economy of South Carolina is bustling, with a number of thriving industries to work for or partake in. There are plenty of sports, museums, malls, and aerospace innovations to view. The cost of living in South Carolina is fairly low, as well, and most residents are able to own their homes.

What Is South Carolina Most Famous For?

South Carolina was the first state to succeed from the Union in 1860, which eventually led to America’s Civil War. This state was heavily involved in the war, and South Carolina was the site of many forts and battles. As such, the Palmetto State is steeped in US Civil War history, and this state remains notable for that role to this day.

Although many South Carolina residents get a bit tired of the constant hype from tourists over sports and the beaches, both things continue to flourish. NASCAR does have a few intermediate tracks in South Carolina, but more of the famous tracks are in North Carolina. Many people mix up the two states for this reason.

However, while both Carolinas also have beaches, Myrtle Beach is exclusively a feature of South Carolina, and it is a well-known beach that attracts visitors from all over the country.

What Are Some South Carolina Flag Facts?

The flag of South Carolina has a clean and simple design. The flag has a blue background with a Palmetto tree in the center and what most people assume is the crescent moon in the top left corner.

Recently, though, there has been some debate as to whether the crescent shape is really the moon. The flag that inspired South Carolina’s was a fort flag during the Civil War, and the crescent on that flag represented a gorget, which is a bit of metal armor that soldiers wore over their throats.

The design of South Carolina’s flag has also never received a uniform set of specifications, so the look of the “moon” and the tree, as well as the size and placement, often differ depending on who makes the flag.

What Is the Best City to Live in in South Carolina?

The major cities of South Carolina, Greensville, Charleston, and Columbia, are still some of the best cities to live in in North Carolina. According to the math and many experts, Greensville is the very best city to live in out of those three.

Greensville has all the perks of city life, as well as convenient proximity to the Blue Ridge Mountains for nature fans. There are several parks and art and history museums to explore, and large corporations fuel the economy. While houses are expensive here, the crime rate is incredibly low.

What Are the Best Places to Visit in South Carolina?

There are many beautiful and fascinating locations to visit in South Carolina, but Charleston and Myrtle Beach are the places that you do not want to miss when you travel to the Palmetto State.

Charleston remains one of South Carolina’s most bustling cities for a reason. It is the oldest one in the state, and there are many historical sites to visit, including Fort Sumter, which is where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. Lots of interesting architecture from this time period can be viewed here, as well.

Charleston also has many beaches to visit if you want to avoid crowds at Myrtle Beach, and this city offers several other fun activities, too, such as food and boat tours.

Myrtle Beach is actually larger than most people realize, and it is part of a sixty-mile stretch of beach that is known as the Grand Strand. Aside from swimming or sitting on the beach, there is also a state park here, as well as several mini golf courses. You might even see a tiger there!
