You’ve certainly heard of Mount Rushmore, but did you know that it’s in South Dakota? South Dakota, a state in the central/north region of the United States, is a state that has a lot more to offer than meets the eye.

From beautiful landscapes and national parks traversed by some of our earliest presidents, a strong agricultural presence, and much more, South Dakota is full of wonders little known to the majority of the world’s population. So if you’re interested in finding out more about what makes South Dakota so special, stay tuned.

Where Is South Dakota on the United States Map?

South Dakota is a state in the United States of America. It’s in the central, northern region of the United States, and is bordered by the following states:

South Dakota is landlocked, meaning it isn’t connected to any coast. Given its location in the middle and to the north of the country, South Dakota is easy to get to (albeit a bit of a long journey) from most places in the United States.

Is South Dakota a Good Place to Live?

Many people find South Dakota to be a pleasant place to live for a variety of reasons.

People are attracted by the extremely low cost of living in South Dakota, for the most part. South Dakota is one of the least expensive states to live in America. This is thanks to its low unemployment rates (which is thanks to their labor and agriculture industries,) favorable tax situations, and generally low costs of goods and services.

South Dakota is also full of beautiful nature, featuring several notable national parks. Even outside of the national parks, South Dakota’s landscape, in general, is vast and gorgeous. This causes many residents to desire to settle down and grow roots in South Dakota, living a simple life off the land.

For entrepreneurial or business-minded folk, there are opportunities for that in South Dakota as well. Sioux Falls and Rapid City are both examples of urban towns in South Dakota that feature contemporary job prospects and residences and have a more liberal social culture.

What is South Dakota Most Famous For?

While South Dakota has many things for visitors to enjoy, South Dakota is by far best known for the famous national monument housed within its borders- the great Mount Rushmore.

People travel from far and wide to see this spectacle of significant American historical figures carved into the rock. Per year, over three million tourists from all over the world come to South Dakota to see the grand spectacle.

Otherwise, South Dakota is known for its rich agricultural industry. Fertile soil and favorable climate make this state one of the largest producers of soybeans, alfalfa, sunflower, and factory farm agriculture like beef and pork farms in the country.

South Dakota Flag Facts

South Dakota’s flag is a unique American state flag. Fun facts about this state’s special flag include:

  • The flag features two main colors- cerulean blue and yellow
  • It features the text “South Dakota The Mount Rushmore State” (another testament to its fame for this national monument)
  • The state seal sits in the center of the flag, surrounded by yellow triangles that symbolize sunshine

Everything about the flag is meant to symbolize the most notable aspects of South Dakota- it’s sunshine, Mount Rushmore, and fields of blue symbolized by the color of the flag.

What is the Best City to Live in South Dakota?

In our honest opinion, Sioux Falls is the best place to live in South Dakota for a number of great reasons.

Similar to the rest of South Dakota, the cost of living in Sioux Falls is incredibly low. However, Sioux Falls has a particularly low cost of living at 6% below the national average- this is quite the figure.

Not only that, but many families are attracted to Sioux Falls due to their great public education systems. In fact, out of the top 10 public schools in all of South Dakota, Sioux Falls is home to three of these schools.

Are you a fan of restaurants and cafes? Sioux Falls has you covered, with a high number of well-received restaurants featuring a variety of different types of cuisine. They’ve certainly got enough vegetarian and vegan options to keep their tree-hugging residents satisfied, and Cordon Bleu-trained chefs own restaurants in this area, too.

Lastly, job prospects in Sioux Falls are great (as if we needed any more positives!) The unemployment rate in Sioux Falls is at 2.4%- far lower than the national average of 4%.

What are the Best Places to Visit in South Dakota?

If you’re looking to try South Dakota out before settling down there, use this section of the article as your guide to the best must-see sites in South Dakota as a visitor.

Mount Rushmore

Of course, every visitor has to visit Mount Rushmore at least once. This historic monument was created in October of 1941 and features the faces of prominent American presidents and historical figures George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.

The faces sit 6 feet high atop the rock- this is truly a spectacle worth seeing.

Badlands National Park

If you’re a fan of nature, Badlands National Park is the choice for you. This national park features landscapes made up of rock formations colored orange and beige, with plenty of hiking trails and camping spots for visitors to enjoy.

Not only that, but you’ll have a chance to spot some neat wild mammals like bison, bighorn sheep, and prairie dogs (which are actually a type of rodent, not a dog.)
