Nebraska is a place where east meets west, at least as far as the USA goes. With a dynamic landscape encompassing plains, sand dunes, and rocky mountains, there’s something for everyone.

Nebraska’s capital, Lincoln, is a high-spirited university town and named after the 16th president of the country, and the state birthed some of the most famous celebrities of all time, including Fred Astaire, Marlon Brando, and Henry Fonda.

The temperate climate appeals to many of the residents. It’s cold in winter and hot in summer. Just how it should be!

Where is Nebraska on the Map?

Straddling both the Great Plains and the Midwest, Nebraska sits almost slap bang in the center of the mainland United States.

It is bordered by South Dakota to the north, Iowa to the east and Kansas to the south. Its western borders touch both Colorado and Wyoming, taking in the vast open plains of what used to be known as the Wild West.

Is Nebraska a Good Place to Live?

Nebraska is a fabulous place to live if you like outdoor activities. Bike rides, hiking, swimming, fishing, hunting…Nebraska boasts it all. There is some stunning scenery too, although it’s probably best to get off the interstate to see it.

It certainly isn’t all flat and boring as some may have you believe, and supports a highly diverse industry, including agriculture, military services, and transportation. This means that Nebraska offers a wide range of industries to support a variety of residents, and the state boasts the country’s lowest unemployment rates as a result.

The crime rate is lower in Nebraska than almost anywhere else in the country, which is another draw for those who wish to live here.

The people of Nebraska are an extremely friendly bunch: they love their football, their leisure time, and their corn! Nebraska is known as The Cornhusker State and was also the birthplace of Kool-Aid.

What is Nebraska Famous For?

Nebraska is one of those underrated states where residents feel their beloved home is all too often written off as being one of the ‘lesser’ states of the USA and yet has given the country plenty of contributions.

Most of these involve food! The Reuben sandwich, an American grilled sandwich, made up of corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing, grilled between slices of rye bread, originates from here.

When it comes to the state’s natural habitat, we find that Nebraska is home to the largest underground lake and water supply in the entire country and has more miles of river than any other state.

The impressive water supply supports a wide range of wildlife, including black bears, beavers, river otters and even mountain lions.

Nebraska Flag Facts

The Nebraskan flag is a bright blue rectangle, on which sits the Nebraskan state seal, in the very center. The seal depicts a man hammering at an anvil in the foreground, and behind him are the Missouri River and a range of mountains.

The flag means a lot to native Nebraskans, depicting the motto of “Equality Before the Law” as a banner around the seal, and yet in recent times it’s not been seen as a particularly impressive flag.

The design, which hasn’t been updated for over 100 years, was recently voted the second worst state flag in the whole of the continent of North America. Ouch!

What is the Best City to Live in Nebraska?

With a population of just 20,000, recent surveys have declared Papillon a clear winner for the most popular state to live in. Papillon sits on the outskirts of the larger metropolis of Omaha to the north, right on the border of Nebraska and Iowa.

Papillon is so popular thanks to its almost non-existent crime rate, its short distance from Omaha, and its excellent school system. It’s perfect for both young families and professionals alike.

If living in the biggest city in the state appeals more, though, you might want to head straight for Omaha. It houses half a million inhabitants so even for a large city, it’s still manageable for those who don’t like to feel too overcrowded.

Omaha is full of historical, cultural, and artistic centers, ranging from the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail to one of the best zoos in the country: The Henry Doorly Zoo.

For those who prefer to be in touch with nature then Gretna might be just the place. It’s still not far from Omaha so is well within commuting distance but is a quiet little suburb with only 4,500 inhabitants.

For that small community feel that’s on the doorstep of the larger, more bustling cities, you can get the best of both worlds in Gretna.

What are the Best Places to Visit in Nebraska?

Nebraska is such a diverse state that you will be sure to find plenty to keep you occupied if you choose to visit. A trip to Omaha means you can not only visit the Henry Doorly Zoo, mentioned earlier, but stop off at The Old Market and see what Omaha would have looked like in bygone days.

For the space buffs, there’s the Strategic Air and Space museum in Ashland, where you can wander around over 300,000 feet of impressive artifacts that capture the history of the USAs Air Command and space travel technology.

Get out of the city and take in the beautiful scenery all over the state, as you see the impressive Chimney Rock formation, the Scotts Bluff national monument, or the Sandhills Region, which will particularly appeal to bird lovers.

Nebraska is a state rich in history, so take the time to get onto the 195-mile long Cowboy Trail, as you retrace the steps taken by many a lonely cowboy who made his way across the Great Plains around two hundred years ago.

If you want to go back even further, then check out the Indian Cave State Park, a protected woodland in which there are caves that Native Americans carved pictures into as far back as several thousand years ago.
