North America Facts Geography

This article explores the flags and the beautiful attractions found in the entire continent that is located in the Northern Hemisphere along with the Western Hemisphere. It is also referred to as the North sub-continent of the Americas. This continent is known as North America. The size of the area is quite large as it covers an entire continent. The location of the continent is such that it is bordered by several countries as well as oceans. Towards the north of the continent, it is bordered by the Arctic ocean and towards the east of North America, it is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean

The western and southern side of the continent is covered by the Pacific Ocean while towards the Southeast side of the continent, South America and the Caribbean Sea are located. Almost all the sides of the continent are surrounded by oceans but the only connection of the continent with the land is through South America

Size of North America 

The total area that is acquired by the entire continent is approximately 24,709,000 square kilometres. The continent is widely spread over 16.5 percent of the earth’s land area and 4.8 percent over the total area which includes both land and water. North America is of utmost significance in the world as it is the third-largest continent in terms of the area that it acquires. The largest is Africa while the second biggest is Asia. However, in terms of the population, the continent is the fourth largest and the third-largest in Europe. 

Countries in North America

North America is an entire continent that consists of a total of 23 countries. Some of the prominent countries that are a part of North America are Bermuda, Canada, Mexico, the United States of America and also the Caribbean and Central American countries. The continent extends for more than 5000 miles which is 8000 kilometres from both the North Pole and the equator. The east to west extent is also of about 5000 miles. 

The landscape of North America

The landscape of the continent is physically divided into five regions. The first region is the mountainous west while the second is the Great Plains. Other than this, the other regions include the Canadian shield, the varied eastern region as well as the Caribbean. 

One of the regions of North America which is the Mountainous west is connected to Mexico and Central America’s western coast. On the other hand, the lowlands and the coastal plains of the continent are located in the eastern region. Towards the western region of the continent, young mountains are rising. 

Rockies Mountains Facts 

The prominent ones of these mountains are the Rockies which are known to be the largest chain of North America. The Rockies are widely spread over Canada, British Columbia as well as the United States of New Mexico. The Rockies Mountains that are the largest mountain range of North America are a part of the parallel mountain ranges that exist in the region. This region is also characterised by volcanic eruptions which are known to be common in this area. Along with the volcanic eruptions, another natural event that occurs commonly here is an earthquake. 

Mojave, Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts 

Other than the mountains, the three major desert regions that exist in North America consist of the Sonoran, Mojave, and Chihuahua. All of these are located in the American southwest as well as northern Mexico. These species are very famous around the world as they are known for the desert species that are commonly found here. Some of the prominent species found here are Joshua Tree and mesquite. 

Natural Resources found in North America 

North America is found to be excessively rich in natural resources. The western region of the continent has a vast variety of oil and natural gas deposits in the area. Most of these deposits are located offshore in the Arctic as well as the Pacific Ocean. 

Grassland Landscape North America 

Most of the landscape of the continent is characterised by grasslands as well as the prairie regions of the Great Plains. Since the region is dominated by the native grasses, the temperature and climate in the area is well suited for it because this particular temperature does not allow the growth of the larger plants. 

The Canadian Shield region 

The Canadian shield towards the eastern, central and northwestern Canada consists of a flat plateau which may be characterised by the rocky landscape but along with that, there are also a variety of lakes in the area. 

Appalachian and also the Atlantic Coast Plain 

On the other hand, the eastern region of North America has the older mountains of the area that consist of Appalachians and also the Atlantic coastal plain. 

Caribbean Landscape

The last physical region in North America is the Caribbean which consists of numerous islands, reefs, and cays. These numbers cross over 7000. Also, these islands and reefs are very diverse as some of them are flat, while the others are rugged. Other than this, some are also mountainous and also volcanic. 

The landscape features of the continent are very diverse and varied as the five physical regions are completely different from one another and the variety of topographical features that the continent has to offer to make it an interesting and attractive place for people to visit. 

North America Climate types

Just like the topography of the continent, there are also a variety of seasons that can be experienced in the area. The climate of North America is divided according to the different topographical features. Therefore, this way climate can be divided into eight regions. 

Deciduous Forest Climate 

One of them is the Deciduous forests which experience all four seasons. The summers are warm but the winters are cold and wet. 

Coniferous forests Climate 

Another region is the Coniferous forests which also has warm summers but along with that, the winters are cold and dry. 

Mediterranean Temperature

The third region is the Mediterranean where the temperature is warm and high and the rainfall is only experienced in autumn and winter months. 

Grassland Climate

Another region is Grassland where the summers are hot, winters are cold and the rain that the region experiences is greater than the normal. 

Tundra Climate

Tundra is another area where the winters are excessively cold, summers are warm and the rainfall is very less. 

The Alpine and mountain ranges 

The Alpine and mountain ranges are characterised to be cold, windy as well as snowy. The winters begin in October in these regions and last up to May and the common temperature during winters is below freezing while the summers begin in June and last up to September and the common temperature in summers is approximately 15 degrees Celsius. 

Rainforest and Desert Temperatures

The other region is the rainforest which has high temperature and also high rainfall throughout the year and the last region is Desert where the temperature is warm to high and the rainfall is also significantly low. 

Climate of Northern Hemisphere 

The northern hemisphere of the continent consists of four distinct seasons. One of them is spring which is spread over March, April, and May. Another season is Summer which is experienced in June, July and August. Another season is Autumn which is usually experienced in September, October and also November while the last is the winter season which is in December, January, and February. 

Regions of constant temperature North America

There are some areas of the continent that have constant temperatures while the other areas have a varied temperature. Areas like Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and also the Southern United States have constant temperatures throughout the year. The rainy season in these areas begins in May and lasts up to October while the dry seasons start in November and last up to April. 

Flags of Countries in North America

North America consists of 23 countries that have their flags. The countries that are a part of the continent are Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and the United States of America. 

All of these countries have their flags that are different from one another. They consist of different colour combinations and also the symbols that are used in the flags. This way, every flag is unique and different from the other. 

Importance of National Flags 

Flags are very important for countries as they are considered a way of identifying the countries. The colours and the symbols that make a flag represent the values, traditions, and customs of the people of that particular country. The people believe that the flag of their particular country is of utmost significance as it allows them to unite. All the individuals of that country are identified together under the same flag therefore, it builds a sense of patriotism, nationalism, and love for their own country. 

All the flags are unique as two countries can not have the same flag. All the countries design their flags according to their interests and customs therefore, all of them are unique that represent their own particular country. 

Appearance of Flags in North America 

The flags of all the countries that are a part of North America are unique from one another in terms of their appearance. 

United States of America Flag Facts

The flag of the United States consists of a rectangle flag that has numerous white and red horizontal lines. Towards the left top of the flag, there is a blue square which is full of white stars. One of the most prominent countries that exist in North America is the United States.

Haiti Flag Facts

Another country is Haiti which consists of a background of two horizontal lines that are of two colours, blue and red. The blue stripe is at the top of the red stripe and in between both stripes, there is a coat of arms which is like a symbol of wings out of which a small green plant blooms. 

Mexico Flag Facts

Another country that is a part of North America is Mexico which also has a unique flag. The flag of North America consists of three vertical stripes that are of three different colours. The colours of the stripes are green, white and red in the order from left to right. In the middle of the flag which means in the centre of the white stripe, there is a coat of arms that symbolises an eagle that is sitting on a cactus. 

The coat of arms that is drawn on the flag of Mexico has historic significance and also, the three stripes of the flag represent different concepts, for instance, the green stripe in the flag symbolises the independence movement that was carried out when the people of Mexico wanted to gain independence from Spain. The white stripe represents the purity of faith that exists in the hearts of the people while the red stripe shows the blood spilled by the warriors and soldiers of the country for the protection and security of their people. The flag of Mexico is very much similar to the flag of Italy which has the same stripes but the difference exists in the shades of the colour and also the coat of arms is absent in the flag of Italy. 

Canada Flag Facts

Another prominent country in North America is Canada. The flag of Italy consists of three stripes in the background of the flag. The stripes are not of equal width and are of the colours red and white. The two red stripes are of equal width while the white stripe has a greater width. The order of the colour of the stripes in red, white and red again. The white stripe in the middle has a red leaf in between. Canada is also among the prominent countries of North America like the United States of America. 

Cuba Flag Facts

Another country that is a part of North America is Cuba. The flag of Cuba is such that there are five horizontal stripes over the entire flag. The stripes are of equal width and the colours of the stripes are blue and white. The order of the colours is alternative as there is a blue stripe, then a white stripe and then again, a blue stripe. On the left side of the flag, there is a red triangle. The base of the triangle is spread over all the five stripes but the edge of the triangle comes up to the middle of the flag in the middle stripe. The red triangle also has a single white star in the middle of the triangle which symbolises hope for the people of that particular country. 

Nicaragua Flag Facts

The flag of Nicaragua consists of three horizontal stripes spread over the entire flag. The stripes are of blue and white colours and are of equal width as well. There are two blue stripes and a single white stripe in the middle. In the middle of the flag, there is a coat of arms that is symbolic of the values, traditions, and customs of the country. The flag of Nicaragua is very similar to the flag of Honduras which is another country in North America. 

The background of both the flags is similar but the only difference is of the coat of arms. There is a coat of arms in the middle of the flag of Nicaragua but in the middle of the flag of Honduras, there are five blue stars that are arranged in order. Another similarity to the flag of Nicaragua is the flag of El Salvador. It is completely similar to the flag of Nicaragua.

 It also has a coat of arms in the middle of the flag but the design of the coat of arms is different in the flag of Nicaragua and also the flag of El Salvador. El Salvador is also a part of North America. The flag of Nicaragua has also some similarities to the flag of Guatemala in terms of the colours of the flag however, the differences between the two flags are also significant. In the flag of Nicaragua, the blue and white stripes are horizontal but the flag of Guatemala, the blue and white stripes are vertical. There is also a coat of arms which exists in the middle stripe. 

There are many other countries in the continent as well that have some similarities with the other flags but are not completely similar to each other as all the flags are unique.

Since North America is a huge continent, it consists of a variety of countries that are loaded with beautiful attractions, peaceful beaches, interesting outdoor activities as well as unique spots for an outing. Some of the popular destinations that are known for the interesting activities and services that they perform are the Grand Canyon National park which is loaded with adventurous sports and activities, New York that has historic buildings like the statue of liberty, Las Vegas that is known for the beautiful casinos and beautiful dining restaurants and also Los Angeles known for the beautiful, lively beaches. North America is worth visiting considering the variety of options that are available for the tourists.
