Where is Rhode Island located on the Map?

The American state of Rhode Island is the smallest in the country and is just 1,045 square miles or 2,707 square kilometres in size. Belonging to New England, a part of the United States for its Colonial influence, Rhode island enjoys wide stretches of sandy shores and is scattered with seaside Colonial towns.

Rhode Island shares its land borders with two other states : Connecticut in the West and Massachusetts to the North. Down south lies the Atlantic Ocean, along with the straits of Block Island Sound and Rhode Island Sound. The state also happens to share a maritime border with New York.

Is Rhode Island a good place to live?

The short answer to that is yes, it most definitely is. Take a look at why.

1. Education

Brown University is one of the best Ivy League research universities in the United States and is one of the jewels of Providence, Rhode Island.

The University of Massachusetts, Boston is hardly half an hour away, and Harvard only an hour away over the state line. This makes this area a veritable hub for college students and a popular choice of place to live in.

2. The best of all worlds

Living in Rhode Island lets you experience the beach life, the city life, suburban life and country living, all in one state.

How?

Cities like Providence and Warwick have oodles of character and history, with beautiful and artistic architecture that is a blend of colonial and neoclassical quirkiness.

Then you have seaside towns like Jamestown. Little Compton and Charlestown, where you have a strong sense of a close-knit community in a relatively large town and the laid-back lifestyle of living in a lazy coastal town.

The State is so small that you hardly have to drive far to get to wherever you want to go. The landscape, too is diverse, ranging from sandy shores along the coast to forested woodlands in the west. Let’s not forget the breathtaking beach views; of jaunty lighthouses that sit atop jagged rocks and look out into the Atlantic.

So yes, Rhode Island offers the best of both worlds.

3. Low Crime Rates

The state has one of the lowest crime rates, significantly below national levels, at 2.2 incidents per 1,000 people, compared to the national average of 3.7. Based on the data collected over the last two decades, one can see a persistent downward trend in crime statistics, in terms of both property crimes and violent crimes.

4. Clam Chowder

It would be remiss not to put this on the list of reasons why Rhode Island is a great place to live in. Rhode Island’s clam chowder is world-famous and is the best you’ll ever find, bar none.

The clam cakes are a close second to clam chowder. Then there’s fried clams, steamed clams, clam fritters and calamari to choose from. The Ocean State’s beaches are a rich source of fresh seafood for all foodies who live in the vicinity, but also for all tourists and visitors alike.

Cons

1. Cost of living

The cost of living in Rhode Island is pretty high. Being such a small state, housing costs are through the roof, with an average one-bedroom apartment in Providence costing up to a whopping $1,600 a month. Living here is 22% higher than the national average.

2. The Weather

You’d think that a coastal state would be all sunshine and warm, lazy days all year long. But you forget, this is the east coast, and Rhode Island gets cold during the winter months, and the heating bills can add up. The summers are warm, sure, but the winters are equally cold, with wet and snowy showers that take a while to get used to.

What is Rhode Island famous for?

Here’s a list of things and places that Rhode Island is particularly famous for:

1. Apart from the breathtaking beaches, amazing seafood and beautiful culture-architecture that New England is famous for, Rhode Island is known for its silver jewelry and silverware.

2. The oldest carousel in the nation, the Flying Horse Carousel is found right here in the small town of Watch Hill, Rhode Island.

3. The first-ever circus to be held in the United States was in Newport, Rhode Island, back in 1774.

4. The world’s largest bug, a big blue termite that is 58 feet long, sits on the roof of New England Pest Control, in Providence.

5. Rhode Island was one of the original thirteen colonies, the last to become a state, and the first to declare its independence from Great Britain in 1776.

Rhode Island Flag Facts

The State flag of Rhode Island is blue, gold and white background.

The flag was officially adopted in 1897, but Rhode Island adopted the anchor—a gold one— as its ‘colonial’ seal back in 1647, and it is considered to symbolize hope, as the blue ribbon under the anchor reads. It is believed that this symbol was inspired by a bible verse that says ‘hope we have as an anchor in the soul.’

Surrounding the anchor are 13 stars that represent the original 13 colonies, and also Rhode Island’s role as the 13th state to ratify the Constitution.

What is the best city to live in Rhode Island?

The most popular city and most densely populated—the second most populated city by national standards— is Providence. This city is not just a thriving center for culture, career opportunities, entertainment and recreation, it is also a buzzing college town, that lures students to its top Ivy-League university, and other renowned education centers.

This capital city is a thriving hub in Rhode Island and a great place to live.
