History of Travelodge

Overview

Travelodge (see also Premier Inn, Ibis) is a hotel chain which spans across the globe. Some of the countries the hotel group operates in are United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Spain, Australia and New Zealand. Many of the Travelodge hotels operate as an independent company and therefore have no link with the brand in other countries.

Travelodge USA

The company was founded by Scott King and incorporated in Southern California in 1939 and their logo was created in 1954 by Robert Hale. In Fact it was one of the first motel chains to be established within the US. First Travelodge opened in San Diego (and headquartered for many years)  just after one year since the company’s inception. Travelodge, in its early years highlighted itself as a budget motel offering lower rates and practical accommodations. The hotel chain also highlighted that its hotels were located in convenient locations close to downtown areas and near local restaurants, tourist attractions, shopping malls and theatres.  However, today Travelodge offers various tiers covering a range of clients from low cost priced properties to full service high rise hotels.

In 1996, HFS Inc acquired Travelodge operations in North America for US$39m including the trademark rights and the franchise system. HFS Inc owned hotel chains such as Days Inn and Ramada. However, HFS later merged with Cendant Corporation where Cendant hotel services were spun off as Wyndham Worldwide.

Company Mascot

Sleepy Bear mascot is strongly associated to Travelodge. It is a half awake teddy bear wearing a robe with Travelodge logo. The Teddy Bear also features wearing a sleeping cap and slippers. The company has always targeted families with children. Kids would receive a free toy bear when they stay in the sleepy bear den room, of which every Travelodge had at least one.  Travelodge also owns a chain of lower price motels called Thriftlodge. Thriftlodge also includes a mascot, a teddy bear with a baseball cap and a T-shirt with Thriftlodge logo and the name TJ on it.
