Ben Stiller was born Benjamin Edward Meara Stiller on November 30, 1965. He is the son of two well-known actors and comedians, Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara. That’s probably where the native New Yorker got his funny bone.

Stiller’s father came from a Jewish family that emigrated from Poland and Galicia, while his mother came from an Irish Catholic background but converted to Judaism after marrying his father. The family is known for celebrating both Hanukkah and Christmas but claims they’re not very religious.

Ben Stiller grew up around the film industry, often visiting television and movie sets as a young child. Growing up around show business, it only made sense that the young man would easily transition to acting himself.

Ben Stiller’s Early Work

Ben Stiller made his television debut at just nine years old, making a guest appearance on his mother’s series Kate McShane. His older sister, Amy Stiller, is also involved in the family business and would later star in several of Stiller’s movies, including Reality Bites, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, and Zoolander.

Stiller was a regular in productions at NYC’s First All Children’s Theater while growing up. He also tried his hand at music, playing in a post-punk band called Capital Punishment. It was around this time that Stiller developed a passion for comedy. After high school, he headed to California to attend the University of California, Los Angeles. However, he left the school without graduating and returned to New York City, where he took acting classes in the hopes of landing a job.

Ben Stiller found steady work quickly, including a brief stint as a writer and performer on Saturday Night Live, appearing in movies like Empire of the Sun, and producing several short films demonstrating his comedic prowess.

Ben Stiller as Comedian and Director

In 1990, Stiller began hosting The Ben Stiller Show on MTV and later the Fox television network. The show featured a slew of famous funny people, and although the ratings were not great, the show won an Emmy Award and critical acclaim for its writing.

Stiller continued to make appearances in films after his show ended. In 1994, he made his directorial debut with the movie Reality Bites. His next directing gig came when he directed The Cable Guy starring Jim Carrey.

Ben Stiller also had starring roles in the 1998 flick There’s Something About Mary with actress Cameron Diaz. He also took on dramatic roles in movies like Zero Effect, Your Friends & Neighbors, and Permanent Midnight. He played the role of a superhero in the movie Mystery Men and then went on to star in Meet the Parents with Robert De Niro.

In 2001, Ben Stiller took on the role of director once again with his film Zoolander. He kept very busy over the next several years, appearing in movies like Starsky & Hutch, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Along Came Polly, and Meet the Fockers. Stiller also made appearances on several television shows and did some voice acting in the animated movie Madagascar. He went back to directing in 2008 with the movie Tropic Thunder, a film he co-wrote, co-produced, and directed.
