What is the difference between Washington and Washington DC? 

People often confuse the state of Washington and Washington DC which is the capital of the United States of America. Washington is in the further north western region of the United States. Washington DC on the other hand is an abbreviation for Washington District of Columbia. This area contains the capital of the United States and was formed with the merging of three states including Maryland and Virginia.

Why is Washington a good place to live?

It is a splendidly beautiful place; Washington is near the region of Cascadia which is known for its beauty. The Cascade Mountain ranges pierce through Washington. The state has an incredible thriving economy and is the best place for individuals seeking to pursue business goals. 

Why is Washington known as the Evergreen state?

For its rich evergreen trees, Washington was dubbed “The Evergreen State” by C.T. Conover, the pioneer Seattle realtor and historian. Never has the nickname been publicly adopted.

Although Washington had attained Statehood in 1889 but it never had a state flag until 1923. Washington’s state flag consists of a state seal showing a picture of state namesake George Washington on a dark green field with an optional gold border. 

Meaning of the Flag

The flag of Washington is the only state flag on a green field; a fitting hue for the evergreen state (the unofficial nickname of Washington). Washington also has the only state flag that displays a picture of an individual person (George Washington, the first president).

Population of Washington

The total population of Washington State is approximately 7,649,844 people.  Out of those 7,649,844 people the percentage of whites is 78.7%, the percentage of African Americans or Blacks is 4.15% and the percentage of Asians is 9.2% while the remaining 7.95% are from various other origins. Washington has a variety of riches, from volcanoes and rainforests to wineries and ferries, which make the state one of the best holiday destinations. Here are a few interesting facts to bear in mind about Washington.

  • Apples are an enormous export for Washington. Washington typically produces more apples than any other state.
  • Everett, Washington is the origin of the largest building in the world which is Boeing’s final production facility.
  • Popular locals of Washington include Jimi Hendrix, Rainn Wilson, Bill Gates, Kurt Cobain, and Bing Crosby.
  • Washington state has more glaciers than any other state.
  • The initial discovery of the region that is now Washington was by the Spanish in 1775, but Lewis and Clark famously visited the area in 1805.
  • Within its boundaries, Washington State has five big volcanoes. Mount Baker, Mount Adams, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, and Mount St. Helens. St Helens recently erupted in 1980.
  • Washington is home to one of the biggest orca whale colonies in the world, the official marine mammal of the state.
  • Father’s Day originated in Washington in 1910.
  • Other than California’s Silicon Valley, Seattle is the fastest rising tech startup city. In reality the online shopping giant Amazon had launched just outside of Seattle.
  • In the northwest corner of Washington, lies the Olympic Peninsula which is one of the world’s rainiest areas, featuring the only rainforest in the continental United States.

Places to visit in Washington

Mount Rainier National Park- The Park is about an hour drive from Seattle. From the park you can observe Mount Rainier (the highest mountain in Washington). It is an excellent destination for hikers who love hiking in the forests as well as slopes. People generally go to high vantage points in their vehicles and enjoy the absolute stunning scenery. It is a totally surreal experience. 

The City of Seattle – Seattle is a well known city around the world and is one of the best places to visit in the United States. Although it is famous for Starbucks, there are plenty of other things to do in Seattle such as going to the Space Needle and checking out amazing views of the city. You can also have a great night out with your friends and family eating at many of the city’s finest restaurants. Moreover you can head over to the Experience Music Project which is a museum dedicated to music, movies and pop culture.

Snoqualmie Falls- Snoqualmie Falls is a great source of attraction for many tourists. The flowing water from the falls make for a stunning view and one is left mesmerized for a moment. There are hiking trails for people who love to walk and explore. There is also a gift shop from where people can buy souvenirs to remember an amazing trip.

Lake Chelan- Attending vineyards are an important attraction for the area, and in locations like Vin du Lac Winery, Karma Vineyards or Mellisoni Vineyards, you can enjoy a day sipping and sightseeing. Travel on a seaplane that takes off and lands in the lake for a peek at the spectacular natural terrain, or try water-skiing during the summer months.
