Maine is one of the most rural states in the entire country and is a wonderful place that any hiker will love. Here are some of the best places to hike in the state.

The Beehive Loop Trail

This trail is a hard, 1.5-mile loop located near Bar Harbor. Primarily used for hiking, this trail is best from May to October. Hikers will experience an elevation gain of 508 feet and enjoy a beach, lake, and beautiful foliage. 

Jordan Pond Path

This trail is a moderate, 3.1-mile loop located near Mount Desert, used for hiking, running, and bird watching. It is best used from April to October. Hikers will experience an elevation gain of 42 feet and enjoy bird watching, lakes, wildflowers, and wildlife.

Cadillac Summit Loop Trail

This trail is an easy, 0.5-mile trail located near Bar Harbor, and is great for all skill levels! Accessible year-round, this trail is great for walking, bird watching, and dog watching. Hikers will experience an elevation gain of 52 feet and will enjoy fantastic, beautiful views.

Maine is one of the most beautiful, rural states in the entire state, so what can you do there? Here are a few ideas. 

Acadia National Park: One of the top 10 most-visited national parks in the entire country, this National Park draws around 3.5 million visitors every year.

Featuring rugged mountains, secluded beaches, coastal views, and dense forest, Acadia includes 160 miles of hiking trails. Additionally, visitors can kayak, swim, bird watch, stargaze, and bike!

Cape Elizabeth: This is a wonderful spot to visit for anyone traveling around Portland! Here you can find the Portland Head Light, which is the oldest lighthouse in the whole state. Located in Fort Williams Park, it dates back to the 1700s, standing around 80 feet tall.

Visitors can also spend the day at Crescent Beach State Park, or Two Lights State Park.

Old Orchard Beach: Just 20-miles outside of Portland, Old Orchard Beach has 7-miles of beach! After sunbathing, you can walk on the pier, exploring their multiple restaurants and shops.

Additionally, families would love the Palace Playland amusement park, which has a Ferris wheel, carnival games, and rides.

Baxter State Park: Another amazing state park, the Baxter State Park is around 210,000-acres and is about 80-miles north of Bangor. This park is home to the state’s tallest mountain, Mount Katahdin, sitting around 5,268 feet tall.

What are some fun facts about Maine, ME?

  • There is no recorded reason for why Maine got its name. Some believe that it is short for “mainland,” and could have been used by sailors, but others think that it was named for the French province of Maine.
  • Maine has a desert that spans around 40 acres, which developed as a result of over-farming. It sits outside of Freeport and is a popular tourist attraction.
  • The highest point on the East Coast is the Acadia National Park’s Cadillac Mountain.
  • Cadillac Mountain was named after the explorer Antoine Laumet de la Mothe, sieur de Cadillac. This is also who the car company is named after.
  • In the 1980s, Burt Schavitz, a photojournalist, founded Burt’s Bees in Maine.
  • The University of Maine has its own Lobster Institute, which is dedicated to learning more about lobsters.
  • Stephen King lived in Maine, and most of his books are set there! In fact, he wrote his first novel while working in Bangor, Maine.
  • There are about 76,000 moose in the state, the highest population in the lower 48 states.
  • L.L. Bean was founded in Maine in 1912 by fisherman and hunter Leon Leonwood Bean. Freeport is now home to the flagship store which has an aquarium and a giant size 410 boot.
